Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy States Preparedness for War-Time Elections After Criticism from Trump.
The President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy has announced he is ready to hold a presidential election amid the current war, provided that Ukraine's parliament and international allies approve. This announcement comes after claims from Donald Trump that he was clinging to power.
Visibly annoyed by the intervention from overseas, Zelenskyy underscored that "This is a matter for the citizens of Ukraine, rather than for individuals from partner countries, with all appropriate respect to our friends."
Nevertheless, he promised to examine options for carrying out a poll in the next few months. "Because this question is currently being posed by the leader of the United States, our ally, I will reply directly: look, I am prepared for elections," Zelenskyy remarked on Tuesday evening.
"Moreover, I am calling on ... the U.S. to assist me, perhaps in conjunction with EU colleagues, to ensure security for the polls, and then within the following 60-90 day period Ukraine will be prepared to hold the elections. I individually have the desire and preparedness for this," he added.
Trump's Comments and Ukrainian Constitutional Reality
These remarks were expressed by Trump in a rambling interview conducted by Politico earlier on Tuesday. "They haven't had an election in a long time," said the American leader. "You know, they talk about a democracy, but it gets to a stage where it's undemocratic any more."
Zelenskyy's mandate expired in May of last year, but the nation's constitution forbids elections during martial law. Furthermore, his political opponents have often said that safety and practical factors do not permit holding an election while the war continues.
"It would only be detrimental," commented an opposition MP. "He's the supreme military commander, and the country is in a position where we lack that luxury, whatever issues we might have with him. It would only help the enemy," he added.
Practical and Legal Hurdles
Zelenskyy highlighted two major questions that must be resolved: the logistical challenge of enabling soldiers, the many displaced people, and those in occupied territories to participate, and additionally, how to constitutionally conduct a vote while martial law is in effect.
He asked for advice from allies on protecting the elections, and from MPs on how to change the constitution to permit a vote. "{I am waiting for proposals from partners, I am expecting proposals from our MPs, and I am prepared to proceed with the elections," affirmed Zelenskyy.
Wider Political Context
Zelenskyy was speaking while returning to Ukraine after wrapping up a round of talks to several European capitals. This occurs while the U.S. administration has reportedly applying pressure on Kyiv to accept a peace deal.
Recently, Trump's son, Donald Trump Jr., asserted at a conference that Zelenskyy was extending the war due to concerns of electoral defeat. He also hinted that his father might "disengage" from Ukraine if the conflict persists. "{It's not accurate. But it's not exactly wrong," responded Trump, when asked about his son's statement.
Reports indicate that the U.S. has proposed Ukraine should relinquish the eastern territories to secure peace, a proposal that would be highly controversial within Ukraine. Additionally, there is as of now no evidence that Russia is willing to agree to any deal, even a deal that might appear advantageous to Moscow.
