Out of the 193 national delegates gathered at the crucial UN climate negotiations in Belém, Brazil, only one had the courage to openly criticize the not present and resistant Trump administration: the official delegate from the tiny Pacific island nation of Tuvalu.

A Powerful Official Declaration

During the summit, Maina Vakafua Talia informed delegates and negotiators at the COP30 summit that Donald Trump had exhibited a "shameful disregard for the global community" by removing United States participation from the Paris climate agreement.

"We can't remain silent while our islands are sinking. We cannot stay quiet while our people are suffering," the minister stated.

Tuvalu, a state of coral islands and reefs, is regarded highly endangered to sea level rise and fiercer storms driven by the global warming situation.

The US Position

The US president personally has demonstrated his contempt toward the environmental challenge, labeling it a "deception" while axing protection measures and clean energy projects in the US and urging other countries to stay with fossil fuels.

"Should you continue with this green scam, your country is going to decline," the US president warned during an address to the United Nations.

Worldwide Concern

During the conference, where Trump has cast a shadow despite refusing to send a US delegation, the minister's direct criticism stands in stark contrast to the typically discreet comments from other countries who are alarmed about attempts by the US to halt climate action but wary of potential retribution from the White House.

In recent weeks, the US made a strong move to block a proposal to reduce international shipping emissions, apparently intimidating other countries' diplomats during coffee breaks at the International Maritime Organization.

Small Nations Speaking Out

Tuvalu's Talia lacks such concerns, observing that the Trump administration has already reduced climate-adaption funding for his island nation.

"The president is imposing sanctions, levies – for us, we have nothing to trade with the US," he said. "This is a moral crisis. There is an ethical obligation to act, the world is looking at him."

Several delegates asked for their perspective about the US's position on climate at COP30 either demurred or expressed cautious, measured answers.

International Consequences

Christiana Figueres, said that the Trump administration is treating global negotiations like "two- and three-year-olds" who make trouble while "playing house".

"This behavior is irresponsible, irresponsible and quite disappointing for the United States," she stated.

Despite the absence of official US delegates at the current UN climate talks, some representatives are nervous of a comparable situation of past obstructions as countries negotiate key topics such as climate finance and a transition from carbon energy.
