During his service on a court jury in 2018, Dan Cooper recognized he must chase accountability for his experience subsequent to sexually assaulted in 2004.

February 27, 2024, two decades post the violation, the convicted individual from Oulton Broad, Suffolk was handed an eight-year sentence in incarceration after being declared culpable of two counts of violation and a single charge of sexual penetration.

At the time, Dan had been 17 when he came across then 21-year-old Shaun Gilder in the city of Norwich in 2004, and their encounter developed into his initial romantic involvement.

During a weekend evening in May of that year, the couple had been at a BBQ when the perpetrator became intoxicated and instructed Dan to drive him home.

Near 12 AM, the individual instructed Dan to stop the car on a isolated lane behind the James Paget Hospital in Gorleston.

The perpetrator assaulted Dan and resulted in significant internal harm which caused him being hospitalized three times that time period.

Deeply affected, Dan was managed to drive Gilder home before heading to his family residence.

“I stayed lying down for a long time thinking, ‘what took place? what had just gone on?’,” he explained.

In September that year, Dan contacted the law enforcement and detailed the attack.

He explained he had provided a statement at the time, but it was not advanced any furthermore because he was “in poor health at that time”.

His grandparents and other family members were unaware he was a member of the LGBTQ+ community, he added.

“Society was distinct at that time,” he said.

Dan is now a project manager for the civil service, but he previously worked in a prison, where he said he would often suppress emotions when prisoners discussed their own trauma.

He added he was physically confronted on the job, which also caused recurring memories.

“Later, while serving on the jury. Recollections of the violation anew. It was a continuous loop that needed to stop,” he said.

The women testifying who helped secure a conviction in the 2018 hearing in which he was a jury member were “motivational”, as stated by Dan.

“It was incredibly moving to see them appearing and giving evidence and addressing the tough interrogations being thrown their way,” he noted.

“I was working at Stansted Airport as an immigration official at this time, and I had to take a three-week absence sick.

“It was then that I again disclosed [the attack] to the law enforcement and I requested to take it forward for me, which they agreed to,” he concluded.

A pair of investigators from Norfolk Police were allocated to Dan’s case in 2018, and it advanced to a legal proceedings at Norwich Crown Court in November of 2023.

In his victim impact statement, Dan detailed how he had been found to have severe trauma (PTSD) connected to the assault.

“I have had, and continue to have, frequent ideas of self-harm,” he stated.

25% of female adults and approximately 6% of male adults have been subject to sexual assault, or attempted violation, based on the national crime survey.

An investigation found that 44% of 180 people who were subjected to explicit testimony in trials reported indicators of PTSD.

“Past trauma experiences, psychological challenges and acute anxiety during a trial can exacerbate emotional and stress reactions,” researchers noted.

In 2004, The survivor’s parent spoke to Gilder when he came to see her son in the medical facility after Dan had told her what had transpired.

“There was a rage similar to flames inside me. I was deeply enraged,” she remembered.

The individual exited and it was the final occasion she saw him.

In conversation with her son, she commented: “I experienced great pride of you for persisting with what you were convinced of and taking it all the way through. It was justice for you. You’d put in tremendous effort.

“Mentally it had deeply affected on you and we could witness how you had difficulties.”

Dan said his existing position as an on-call firefighter for firefighting services had helped him with the recovery journey.

“Serving the public has provided me with something to focus on and exist for,” he said.

Dan said he now cared for his canine companions, mountain bikes and travelling.

Since May he has initiated production of videos about his journey and posts them on digital networks, where he now has 12,000 subscribers on the video app.
