The exit of the British Broadcasting Corporation's chief executive, Tim Davie, over allegations of partiality has sent shockwaves through the organization. He emphasized that the decision was made independently, catching off guard both the board and the rightwing media and politicians who had led the campaign.

Currently, the departures of both Davie and the chief executive of BBC News, Deborah Turness, demonstrate that intense pressure can produce outcomes.

The Start of the Controversy

The crisis began just a week ago with the release of a lengthy memo from Michael Prescott, a ex- political reporter who served as an external adviser to the network. The dossier alleges that BBC Panorama manipulated a speech by Donald Trump, portraying him to endorse the January 6 rioters, that its Arabic coverage favored pro-Hamas viewpoints, and that a group of LGBTQ employees had excessive sway on coverage of gender issues.

The Telegraph wrote that the BBC's silence "demonstrates there is a serious problem".

At the same time, former UK prime minister Boris Johnson criticized Nick Robinson, the sole BBC employee to publicly fight back, while Donald Trump's spokesperson called the BBC "100% fake news".

Underlying Politically-Driven Motives

Aside from the specific claims about the network's reporting, the row hides a wider context: a political campaign against the BBC that acts as a textbook example of how to confuse and weaken balanced reporting.

The author emphasizes that he has never been a member of a political party and that his views "are free from any political agenda". Yet, each complaint of BBC reporting aligns with the conservative culture-war strategy.

Questionable Claims of Impartiality

For instance, he was surprised that after an hour-long Panorama documentary on Trump and the January 6 events, there was no "similar, balancing" programme about Democrat presidential candidate Kamala Harris. This represents a flawed view of impartiality, akin to giving platform to climate denial.

He also alleges the BBC of amplifying "racial matters". But his own argument undermines his assertions of neutrality. He references a 2022 report by History Reclaimed, which highlighted four BBC programmes with an "reductionist" narrative about British colonial history. Although some members are senior university scholars, History Reclaimed was formed to counter ideological accounts that suggest British history is disgraceful.

The adviser is "perplexed" that his requests for BBC staff to meet the report's authors were overlooked. Yet, the BBC determined that History Reclaimed's selective of instances was not analysis and was not a true representation of BBC output.

Inside Challenges and Outside Criticism

This does not mean that the BBC has been error-free. At the very least, the Panorama documentary appears to have included a inaccurate clip of a Trump speech, which is improper even if the speech encouraged unrest. The BBC is expected to apologize for the Trump edit.

He, whose PR firm worked with media companies like Sky, was called a friend of Robbie Gibb, a ex- Conservative communications head who became part of the BBC board after assisting to launch the conservative news channel GB News. Gibb himself reportedly wrote a long and negative note about BBC reporting to the board in early September, weeks before Prescott. So why has the BBC so far said nothing, apart from indicating that Shah is likely to apologise for the Trump edit when testifying before the parliamentary committee?

Given the massive amount of programming it broadcasts and criticism it receives, the BBC can occasionally be excused for avoiding to stir passions. But by insisting that it did not comment on "leaked documents", the corporation has appeared timid, just when it requires to be strong and courageous.
